For Europe 1we answered a few questions from Margaux Fodéré about relocation in the pharmaceutical sector.
-
Three main points:
- 1. from 2009 to 2019, we recorded 1 relocation in the pharma sector, since 2020 we have gone up to 13;
- 2. from 2009 to 2019, investment announcements in the pharma sector averaged €404m/year. For the period 2020-2022, the figure is €2,275 M/year, and already €919 M for 2023, i.e. a more than 5-fold increase in the amounts invested;
- 3. In terms of jobs, the pharma sector lost almost 13,000 net jobs between 2009 and 2019. From 2020 to 2022, we're in the black (just over 1,500 net jobs). But 2023 is negative again, mainly due to job cuts in head office activities, but also at a number of industrial sites(Novartis, Sanofi, MSD...).
The trend is therefore clearly positive from 2020 onwards, although there is some uncertainty as to the sector's ability to continue in the long term.
